Mistaken prescriptions also a risk with mail order pharmacies

Just because you don’t go to the pharmacy to pick up your prescriptions doesn’t mean you are protected from pharmacy errors. Mail order pharmacies also make mistakes and it's important to know your rights if you suffer a prescription error.

Case in Point

A recent story highlights that mail order pharmacies also make mistakes. Katherine Brown opened a package that arrived in the mail that should have contained her pills to treat a water retention issue. But she was lucky enough to catch the wrong medication mistake before she took any of the pills, which were actually antidepressant Prozac.

Brown said the bottle was similar to the one she was used to and even the pills were easy to mistake for hers. The only reason she had to suspect an error was that she noticed the amount of pills was incorrect.

Many people are not lucky enough to catch prescription errors

Unfortunately, pharmacy errors occur to thousands of people every year. Sometimes, the symptoms of the wrong medication or wrong dose are mild, but sometimes they are fatal.

After taking a prescription you just received, whether at the pharmacy or in the mail, and you just don’t feel right a medication mistake could be the culprit. Often, people do not check that the pharmacist gave them the correct bag, or notice that the pills are slightly different. But it is not your job to ensure that your prescription is correct – that is the pharmacists’ duty of care to you.
